One of the most gifted songwriters of all time. Neil Diamond’s songs and music have touched people throughout the world for over 40 years, and his fan base covers a huge range of age groups.
When I recently performed in Nottingham, where a young couple told me how when they were on holiday in Spain, they decided to go out to see a Neil Diamond Tribute one evening. From that moment on they were hooked, Neil’s songs had such a great impact on them they started buying his albums and are now massive fans. Unfortunately, I don’t know who that particular tribute act was, but it was obviously a job well done.
My own appreciation of Neil Diamond came after seeing “The Jazz Singer” Until that point, I was really into “Heavy and Pop” Rock. I didn’t have any Neil Diamond (vinyl at that stage - pre CD era) records slotted in between my Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Journey etc albums. That was about to change!
First,the Jazz Singer album found it’s way into my collection, followed by Hot August Night, and so the process began. I was gigging in Pubs and Hotels in S.A. and added a few Neil Diamond songs to my set list (Due to frequent requests for them) Beautiful Noise was the the very first, followed I am I said, September ‘Morn, not the one’s you’d expect like Sweet Caroline and Cracklin’ Rosie (they were only added much later) A Bass guitarist called “Tich” from a local circuit band showed me how effective Neil’s songs are when the correct expression is added and I owe a lot him iro getting me properly started with Neil Diamond song performances.
From audience responses, and a greater appreciation of Neil’s songwriting genius, I eventually developed a Tribute calling it “A Beautiful Noise”. It was inevitable. I have the greatest respect for Neil Diamond, a Master Craftsman who has written classic songs that will stand the test of time. He is an incredible performer who, after 40 years, is able to fill stadiums around the world and put on the most incredible stage shows.
